How to Choose the Right Puppy Pads: Size, Absorbency and Layers Explained

Choosing a puppy pad sounds simple — until you wake up to a soaked floor and a confused puppy. The difference between pads usually comes down to four things: size, absorbency, layer construction and the backing. This guide walks you through each one so you can buy once, and buy right.

1. Pick the Right Size First

The most common mistake is buying a pad that is too small. A pad should cover at least 1.5× your dog's body length, because puppies spin and adjust before they go.

2. Understand Absorbency (It Is About the Layers)

Absorbency is not marketing — it is structure. A quality pad uses a layered system:

  1. Non-woven top sheet — pulls liquid through instantly so paws stay dry.
  2. Tissue / distribution layer — spreads liquid so it does not pool in one spot.
  3. SAP core (super absorbent polymer) — turns liquid into gel and locks it in.
  4. PE waterproof backing — the final seal that protects your floor.

A 6-layer pad like our Instant Absorb six-layer training pads holds far more than the thin "economy" pads sold in supermarkets — and it holds it without sloshing back out when your dog steps on it.

3. Quilting Matters More Than You Think

The diamond-quilted surface is not decoration. Quilting channels liquid toward the SAP core and prevents it from running off the edge of the pad — which is exactly what happens on flat, cheap pads when a dog picks one corner.

4. Odor Control: Activated Charcoal Options

If the pad lives indoors all day, odor control becomes the deciding factor. Activated bamboo charcoal layers trap ammonia molecules instead of just masking them. Read more in our deep-dive: Why bamboo charcoal pads keep homes fresh.

5. Match the Pad to the Dog
